About Mary Janzen

Mary (Hein) Janzen was born in South Russia and she is the daughter of Regina Schmidt(Gratz) Hein and Johann (aka John) Hein. Mary is also sometimes shown as Maria in some records. She has a twin sister Minnie Lohrenz. She is one of 12 children however seven siblings died in infancy. She is the grand daughter of Martin and Katherina (Bauman) Hein.

After three weeks of sailing on the Steam ship Lessing, with a stop at Le Havre, France, 17 yr old Mary, her mother and four siblings arrived in New York City on July 17, 1878. They then traveled for several weeks on the Santa Fe Railroad before arriving at Peabody in Marion County Kansas. Her father Johan arrived 40 days later after he had to stay behind because he became ill and was hospitalized while they were in Hamburg waiting to board the ship.

The family bought an 80 acre farm near the Ebenfield church in Marion County Kansas and began their new life in the united States.

Seven years after she arrived, Mary married Gottfried Janzen on October 8th 1885 in Marion county Kansas. Gottfried reportedly arrived in New York on the same ship as the Hein family.

She and Gottfried moved to a homestead near the Orienta area in Major County Oklahoma following the Cherokee Land run on September 16, 1893. She is the mother of William (died at age 2), John, Caroline "Carrie", Minnie, Fred, Anne, and Jacob.

She is buried along side her husband Gottfried in the Brethern Mennonite Cemetery North of Fairview OK.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: May 15 2024, 21:55:56 UTC
