Mary Whitlock, daughter of James Whitlock and Agnes Christmas, was born on 15 April 1741, Albemarle County, Virginia. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Cross Christmas and Annie Duke and James and Frances Whitlock.

Mary Whitlock Jones is mentioned in Thomas Christmas's will dated 28 December 1768, recorded 7 September 1769: "Item: I give and bequeath unto my six grandchildren (Viz.) Charles Whitlock, James Whitlock, Mary Jones, Anne Austine, Thomas Whitlock, and Nathaniel Whitlock, to them and their heirs, assign forever ten pounds current money each".

Mary's great grandfather James Whitlock, son of Richard and Joane Whitlock, was the immigrant ancestor to America. He was born about 1650 in Wokingham, England. The Whitlocks can be traced back to John Whitloke and Agnes de la "Beche in Bedfordshire, England. In 1483,a a commission was sent to the 'tenets of the manor; to accept J. Whitloke as their lord and content unto him their dues." Agnes de la Beche Whitlock's will is dated 26 March 1491: "I Agnes wife of John Whitloke... to be buried in the chapell of Saynt Katern in the monestry of Saint Augustine."
