"Original Settlers of Georgia" says that, "The first comers into Screven County were Bird Lanier' and eighteen others. "Story of Georgia and Georgia People" says that "headrights were granted to Benjamin Lanier and Lemuel Lanier in 1756."

Bird Thomas Lanier married in Surry County about 1728, Mary; some descendants say her name was Madison. They were in Brunswick County before 1734; later this land was cut off in Lunenburg County. In 1787 he moved to Duplin County, N.C. in company with his brother Lemuel of Surry County and his family. They remained in Duplin COunty until 1756, when both Bird Thomas and Lemuel moved on to Burke County, Georgia.

The children of Bird Thomas and Mary Lanier are uncertain. Only one son is definate - he is Benjamin. It is probable that they had sons Bird, John and Thomas, the last three living and dying in Duplin County.
