Research Notes:

There were a number of "Mary Walkers" in the 2nd half of the 17th Century in Colonial Virginia. Walker was a fairly-common Surname in England and Mary was, with Sarah & Elizabeth, the most-common English-girl's Given name then. What distinguishes "this" Mary Walker from here contemporaries, where, alas, most primary civil-documents are sadly missing? Many "family genealogies" sadly confuse her with others homonyms.

The Mary Walker who married (John) Zachary Lewis in 1691 was the daughter of John Walker and Rachel (Croshaw) Walker, both from established Colonial Virginia families and who lived in Old Rappahannock County (aka "Northern Neck"), north of the James River and south of the Potomac River. Some genealogies state she was the daughter of John & Rachel's son, Thomas Walker who married Susannah Peachy but Thomas was born in 1670, and was her older brother. [1]

Mary's genealogy on Geni.com has her as the daughter of William Walker and wife Elizabeth (Warren) Walker, of New Kent Co., Virginia. However, their daughter, Mary Walker, b: ca. 1775-76, married Thomas Massie in 1698 in New Kent County, Virginia; so she could not have been Zachary Lewis' wife. [2]

Other genealogies say she was the daughter of a different William Walker, whose family was also from Staffordshire, England (so probably cousins with this family). He married Mary Baylor in Virginia. They may have had a daughter named Mary but in fact, they lived around 1700, not in the 1650-70s.

The best candidates for this Mary Walker's parents are John Walker and Rachel (Croshaw) Walker, who lived in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia, and had several children. They married in 1667 in King & Queen County. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Virginia colonial militia and a large landowner; his father was Capt. Thomas Walker, who immigrated from Staffordshire, England, around 1640 and served in Virginia's House of Burgesses in 1662. Rachel was the grand-daughter of Col. Raleigh Crowshaw, one of the first settlers at Jamestown and a noted Indian interpreter and fighter. [3][4]
