Fact: Residence (1850) Greenwood, Steuben, New York, United States Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch On the morning of March 8, 1857 a renegade band of Sioux Indians, called the Wahpekute, came to Spirit Lake and the Gardner cabin (Mary had married Harvey Luce, they and their two young children lived with the Gardners). At first the Wahpekute seemed friendly but then demanded food and supplies. Although Rowland Gardner tried to comply, they shot him and then proceeded to kill Francis Gardner and the rest of the family, except their youngest daughter Abbie (one sister, Eliza, was in Springfield, Minnesota, at the time). Abbie, not yet 14 years old, was taken captive. During the next few days, the renegade Sioux went from cabin to cabin around the Spirit Lake area killing settlers, 35-40 in all, and took three additional captives who were later killed. Abbie was released months later after a 0 ransom was paid, she was the sole survivor of the massacre and 30 years later wrote a book of her ordeal.
