Mary Margolies Cohen

Marshall Cohen: "My paternal grandmother Margolie (Mary) Frankel Cohen was born in May 1865 (1), probably in Druskininkai(2), Lithuania. In c1881 (3) she married my grandfather Moses (Morris) Hirsch Cohen (1855-1921)(1). Moses was from the nearby town of Meretz (currently Merkine,Lithuania) and this was his second marriage."

"Little is known of his first wife. She had two children, Sarah (1881-1958) and Abraham (c1883). She evidently died when Abraham was young because Margolie's first child Julius was born in May 1884; her second, William was born in 1889."

"The 1900 and 1910 US census records are inconsistent, but it appears that Moses may have come to the US first, c1890, and the others came a few years later. The details of the immigration, and who they knew in Boston, are unknown. However, in the 1880's there was a thriving Litvak community in Boston, and no doubt there were friends and relatives to greet him when he arrived."
