The former was a son of Philip and Louisa Altman nee Kepple. Jacob Altman was born in Greensburg, Westmoreland county, in the year 1788, and removed with his parents to Altman farm, when but eight years old, and lived there all his life of 81 years – he died Sept. 14th, 1854. Margaret Altman was born in Cambria county, about 1783 and died in 1830, in her 47th year. Our subject was married to Mary Etta Cribbs, about 1845. Their children were: David Cribbs, b. 1849, m. to Martha Graham, d. April 15, 1879; Margaret Jane, d.; Henrietta; William Harrison, lives in Chicago; Mary Catharine, m. to Robert Lattimer, and lives in Burrell township; John Luther Melancthon, lives in Kansas; Margaret Emily, Martha Augusta, Henry Nitterrauer, and Louisa Mendinia. This tract was taken up about 1796, Mr. Jacob Altman being about eight years of age at this time. On this farm is a part of the site of the old town of Newport, commonly called the “Deserted Village.” Mrs. Altman relates that when she was married he mother gave her a table cloth which had been bought at one of the stores in this place. On the level tract between Mr. Altman’s house and the creek is said to have been an Indian camping ground. Bars of Lead and other Indian relics were found. This farm lies enclosed between Black-lick creek and the Conemaugh river, and is one of the oldest and best known places in Indiana county. In the old grave yard on part of the old farm we found the following names and dates of births and deaths of the Altman family: Philip Altman, sr., b. December 28, A. D. 1763, d. May 29, 1813; Louisa, wife of Philip Altman, d. March 8, 1844, in the eighty-sixth year of her age; Philip Altman, jr., b. August 4th, 1785, d. October 18, 1802; Lucinda, consort of Brice Henderson, d. October 8, 1849; Levi Altman, d. Sept 12, 1849; Mary Henderson, d. August 31, 1850; Samuel Altman, d. July 23, 1821; Jacob Altman, d. Sept, 14, 1854; Margaret, wife of Jacob Altman, d. October 17, 1830; Mary Altman, d. February 16, 1854.
