Ataloa, (Mary Stone)

Chickasaw -Born---Duncan, Oklahoma,

Education: Oklahoma College for Women;University of Redlands (AB); Columbia University (AM). Awards: Honorary Scholarship at the International Institute, New York City, a graduate school for educators of every nation; Rockefeller Fellowship for research in Indian culture and art. Dividing her interests between Indian art and music, she is a concert artist of ability and charm. When a member of the faculty of Bacone College (197-35) through the inspiration and effort she brought into being its famous Art Lodge. She has stimulated many Indian students to greater endeavor and attainment. She has been an active member of many committees in connection with Indian matters, and served on the Oklahoma State Welfare Committee by appointment of the governor. (1934-35) Attending an international conference sponsored by Yale-Hawaii Universities in Honolulu, in which thirty nations participated, she established an international scholarship, given to an Indian girl for graduate study at Hawaii University, and an Hawaiian girl for study in the states. (1936) During the war years she continued to work toward the furtherance of international understanding, serving with the War Relocation Authority and the United War Chest. Club memberships: Alpha Theta Phi; Theta Alpha Phi; American Association of University Women; Women's University Club; International House; National Congress of American Indians. Her biography appears in "Who's Who in Oklahoma" (1929); "Outstanding Women of Oklahoma;" "Who's Who in California." She has written for various magazines and is now writing two books on Indian history and art.
