About Mary Margaret McGinnis

Mary Lynch's birth was registered on March 16, 1879 in the District of Leighlinbridge in the County of Carlow in Ireland.

Mary Lynch came to the United States thru Ellis Island about 1896. Her mother's brother Michael Doyle paid her passage. Mary paid the passage for her sister Bridget (Bridie) who arrived in the US in 1901. Mary also paid the passage of her brother James in 1910.

Mary stayed on the farm in Stanton Iowa following the death of her husband Edward with her sons Louis and Arthur running the farm. The family held an auction to liquidate the farm equipment. Mary relocated in Shenandoah about a year after the death of her husband Edward, purchasing the house at 110 W Valley where she lived the remainder of her life. Daughters Fastina and Marcella lived with Mary after her move to Shenadoah. Marcella married in 1959. Faustina cared for Mary until her death in 1974.

Prior to moving to Shenandoah, the McGinnis family lived in the Imogene community and the Stanton-Villisca area.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ed McGinnis, 95, who died Nov.22 at Hand Community Hospital, were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah on Nov. 25. The Rev. Gerald Deere celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection.

William P. Leaby, S.J., a grandson, was the lector. Acolytes were great-grandsons, Steve and Terry McGinnis, and a friend, Brian Farrell. Music was by St. Mary’s Choir under the direction of Mrs. Gage Parker.

Casket bearers were grandsons Arthur McGinnis Jr., Douglas McGinnis, Jerry McGinnis, Richard McGinnis, Francis Leahy and Thomas Leahy. Church ushers were grandsons Robert Leahy and Patrick McGinnis and great-grandsons Timothy McGinnis and Thomas McGinnis, Serving on the floral committee were Mrs. Gilbert Burkhiser, Mrs. Thomas Doyle, and Miss Ruth Maher, Mrs. Vern Lightfoot and Mrs. Robert Maher were in charge of the memorial registration.

Mrs. McGinnis, the former Mary Lynch, was born January 9, 1879, In County Carlow, Ireland. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Lynch. She immigrated to America as a young girl in 1896 and made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Doyle, Sr., an uncle and aunt, in Imogene. She was married to Ed McGinnis in 1904, and to this union eight children were born.

She was preceded In death by her husband in 1946; also by her parents; two brothers, James and David Lynch; one sister, Mrs. William (Bridget) Grant; one grandson, Eugene McGinnis; an Infant granddaughter, Mary Clare McGinnis; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. E. J. (Bud) MCGinnis, and a son-in-law, Gilbert O’Dowd.

Survivors include four sons, John A., Bellevue, Neb. Edward J. (Bud) and Arthur, both of Shenandoah; and Louis of Alliance, Neb.; four daughters, Mrs. Ed (Alice) Leahy, Imogene; Mrs. Gilbert (Mildred) O’Dowd, Corning; Faustina McGinnis and Mrs. Joe (Marcella) Ryan, both of Shanandoah; 27 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters Mrs. Martin (Anna) McAndrew, Mrs. Dan (Ellen) Hurley, both of Omaha; and Mrs. Catherine Bambrlck, County Carlow, Ireland, and a sister-In-law, Miss Mayme McGinnis of Shenandoah.

Relatives and friends attended from Omaha, Bellevue, Lincoln, and Alliance, Neb.; Prairie du Chen, Wis.; Des Moines, Red Oak, Clarlnda, Imogene, Stanton, Farragut, Essex and Shenandoah, Iowa. Prior to moving to Shenandoah, the, McGinnis family lived in the Imogene community and the Stanton-Villisca area.

Interment was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Imogene. Jennings Chapel Service was In charge of the funeral
