About Mary McVay

The only completely unambiguous record of a Margaret McVay existing is the baptism record for Eliza.

Richard remarried in 1830, so his first wife had died by then.

There are no other likely records in the UK. Of the possible but unknowables - Ge*E*Vey, male child, bapt 2 April 1819 at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. Father Richard Vey, mother Vey. Could the difference in accents cause this weird record? Eliza was born in Richmond the following year, so improbable.

Problem solved. Richard married Mary, not Margaret and the vicar wrote the wrong name on Eliza's baptism, and that was sent to the Bishop of York in the regular transcripts. The marriage was Anglican not Catholic or non-conformist, so that resolves a furphy raised in the Family Search transcripts.

BIRTH & BAPTISM Mary Laing was baptised 13 August 1797 at St Nicholas church Guisborough, North Riding, Yorkshire (actually on the North Yorkshire moors), father James Laing, mother Sarah.

At the same church on 31st May 1819, she married Richard McVay born Osmotherley and living in Richmond, all within easy reach of each other by horse or carriage. She moved to live with Richard at Leyburn near Richmond, where Eliza was born, and son James in 1823. In 1825 they were living at Guisborough when son Richard Laing was born, and Mary probably died as a consequence. It appears as if Mary went to stay with her mother for the birth.

DEATH & BURIAL Mary McVay, born 1799, died 1825 aged 26 yrs and was buried 6 May 1825 at St Mary's Anglican church Richmond Yorks North Riding. Mary, wife of Richard McVay was buried at Richmond 6th May 1825. This is Eliza Maria's mother who died in childbirth that year and has a memorial with Richard's in St Mary's.

Mary McVay, wife of Richard, died May 1825 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin, where there is a memorial plaque, on 6 May 1825
