Mary Brown was born c. 1634, and is said to be "of Stamford, Connecticut."[1] Her parents are unknown.
Family
Mary married on 4 December 1654 at Stamford, Connecticut to Joseph Mead.[2] The Rev. E. B. Huntington officiated.[2] They had six children.
Children of Mary and Joseph:[3]
Settling in Greenwich
Joseph Mead was living at Stamford when he and Mary met and married. In Spring of 1657, with his brother John, Joseph removed temporarily to Hempstead, Long Island, where several Stamford families had newly settled in 1644. They returned to Stamford in the later part of 1658.[4] In 1672, Joseph was among the first proprietors of Horseneck, called the "27 Proprietors of 1672."[5]
Death & Legacy
Mary's husband, Joseph, died on May 3, 1690 at Greenwich, without making a will, and on 15 March 1692/3, administration of his estate was granted to his widow, Mary, and son, Joseph (Fairfield Probate 4: 101).[2] The family had filed a petition with the court requesting approval of their plan for distribution (this was approved).[2] Sons, Joseph, Daniel, and Elisha had signed the agreement, and sister, Mary, had made her mark.[2] Richard and Mary were both minor children, and they chose their older brother, Joseph, and their cousin, John Mead, as guardians.[2]
Mary Brown, wife of Joseph, died Aug 2, 1728 in Stamford.[6]
