Mary V. Meador

Daughter of John Meador and his wife Ann.

It's not clear from the 1850 census if Mary was actually ten years older than she later claimed (to make herself younger than her husband) or, less likely, if she was a second Mary born to the family in 1850 after the census was taken:

[Lycurgus and Sarah [Ferguson] Meador listed on same page. James' brother John T. Sneed would later marry Sarah Ferguson's sister Mary Jane as his second wife.]

James served in the Confederate army during the Civil War in Co. G, 24th VA Infantry.

In 1870, Mary was listed alone with their children, including a daughter born in 1866 or 1867:

James has not been found on the 1870 census and may have been living already with Louisa Foley Stroud (daughter of James Foley Sr. and Judith Thomas and sister-in-law of James' brother John), as she was already separated from her husband by that time. Like James, Louisa and her children can be found on the 1870 census. Her husband Dr. William D. Stroud was alone living as a boarder in Fayetteville, Fayette Co., WV.

James must have gone back to his wife Mary, as their last child James Jr. was born in 1875 or 1876 in Mercer Co., WV. But the reconciliation didn't last and in 1875 or early 1876, James joined others of his family in Jackson Co., MO, where he married Louisa in February 1876. They were living there in 1880:
