About Mary Ann Smith

Mary Ann "Lannie" Mitchell Smith was born to William Cooke Mitchell, Jr., and his first wife, Mary Ann Holmes. William was a polygamist and had three wives, including Augusta Phearson and Hulda Amanda Dalton. William Cooke Mitchell was also the son of a polygamist, William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., (1806-1857), and his first wife, Eliza Ridsdale. They were married in York, Yorkshire, England, in 1827. Their son William Cooke Mitchell, Jr., was born April 13, 1835, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They boarded the ship, Tyrian, for New Orleans, Louisiana, and it set sail on September 21, 1841, and they arrived on November 9, 1841, where on November 24th, they proceeded to Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois, about 20 miles south of Nauvoo.

They were baptized in the Church of Latter-day Saints at Nauvoo on May 5, 1843. On May 11, 1846, they crossed the Mississippi River to Iowa having been driven by the mob from Nauvoo. They arrived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 1, 1846. Two weeks later they crossed the Missouri River, and were residents of Winter Quarters in December of 1846. Eliza Ridsdale Mitchell passed away January 11, 1847, at Winter Quarters and was buried in the Winter Quarters Pioneer Cemetery there. William Cooke Mitchell went back to Liverpool, England, April 11, 1847, to serve a mission to Great Britain. His son, William Cooke Mitchell, Jr., traveled with him.

They returned to America from England on April 2, 1849, and arrived at New Orleans. By May 17th they were in Kanesville, Iowa, where William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., took his second wife, Louisa Moore on July 18, 1849. Both William's and Louisa departed for Utah from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa, in the Ezra T. Benson Company July 15, 1849, and combined with the George A. Smith Company as they traveled together crossing the plains. Thomas E. Ricks traveled from Salt Lake City, Utah with an eight-ox team to assist the two companies and met them at Independence Rock on the Sweetwater River.

They arrived in Utah October 25, 1849, in the Ezra T. Benson Company. They were called as Iron Mission missionaries, and in George A. Smith's company left encampment on the Provo River at Fort Utah to travel to the mission. William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., was first captain in ten in Simon Baker's Fifty. They departed on December 16, 1850. In the party was William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., 44, Louisa Mitchell, 28, William Cooke Mitchell, Jr., 15, and Enoch Mitchell, 1 year old. William was listed in the 1850 census for Iron county, Utah as a brick maker with real estate valued at $500.

On January 5, 1851, William Sr. and Jr. were members of the Iron County English Choir, organized at Cove Creek, Utah. That April William Sr. was awarded 10 acres in Range 5, Block 1, Lot 4, in Parowan, Utah, and were shown in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, in Utah Territory, Iron County. In November they arrived at Coal Creek (Cedar City) Utah, to assist in settlement. William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., married Mary Ann Moore in the Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Utah, and they had six children. He married Ann Dalton LeFevre in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. William Cooke Mitchell, Sr., passed away June 20, 1857, in Parowan, Utah, due to a logging accident. He was only 51 years old at the time of his death.

William Cooke Mitchell, Jr., must have married his first wife, Mary Ann Holmes, about 1860. She was the daughter of Cornelius Holmes and Eliza Abby. They had seven children, and their daughter, Mary Ann Mitchell was born Feburary 10, 1863, in Parowan, Utah. In the 1870 census, Mary Ann was 7 years old, living with her parents in Parowan, Utah. They were listed as follows in the census: Wm. C., 38, Mary Ann, 30, Augusta, 22, (plural wife), Sarah B., 5, James W.B., 2, Wm. C., Jr., 11 months old, and Walter C., 1 month old. William and Mary Ann's children were William C., Eliza Ann, Mary Ann, Sarah R., James W., William C., and Mabel. With Augusta he had 5 children, Walter C., Ella A., Henry A. Maud A., and George A. With Hulda he had only one child, Joseph Clayton. He also later married Sarah C. Dalton.

By the 1880 census, they were still living in Parowan, and were listed as follows: Wm. C., 48, Hulda A., 31, Mary Ann, 17, Sarah, 15, James, W.B., 12, William C., 10, and Emma, 8 years old. I don't know if Mary Ann's mother, Mary Ann Holmes Mitchell, had passed away by then, but she was not listed in the home in 1880. William was working as a tax assessor and collector.

Living just three doors down was the first wife of John Anderson West, Betsy J. Fish West, 44, and her children, John Anderson West, Jr., 15, Horace Erastus, 13, and Sarah A., 11. John Anderson West was the brother of Emma Seraphine Smith, who married Jesse Nathaniel Smith, the parents of Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., who was the future husband of Mary Ann "Lannie" Mitchell. By 1880, John Anderson West was living with his plural wife, Mary Jane Robinson West, and their children in Snowflake, Arizona. They had moved there shortly after Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Sr., had gone to Arizona for the LDS church in 1879 to colonize that area of Arizona.

Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., and Mary Ann Mitchell were married in about 1880, and had their first child, Jesse Nathaniel Smith III in 1882 while living in Snowflake, Arizona. At one point, several Mormon polygamists moved to Mexico when they began to be prosecuted for having plural wives, and it was there that several of Mary Ann and Jesse N. Smith, Jr's children were born.

Mary Ann Mitchell Smith's father, William Cooke Mitchell, born April 18, 1835 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, passed away at the age of 76 years old on May 22, 1911, in Parowan, Utah. The following year, Mary Ann Mitchell Smith's husband, Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., passed away in Mexico in 1912.

I can find no record of Mary Ann Mitchell Smith in public records until the 1920 census for Parowan, when she was listed as a 56-year old widow living with her sons, Moroni West Smith, 25, Samuel C., 18, and Joseph H., 15. All three of these sons were born in Mexico. Mary was not working but her sons were working as farm laborers.

Mary Ann Mitchell Smith passed away at the age of 86 on March 14, 1949, and was buried in the Parowan City Cemetery, in Parowan, Utah.
