About Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr.
There is another photo showing Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., under the Media Tab above which was found on Family Search.org. That photo depicts Emma Seraphine West Smith with some of her children, and those of her sister Margaret, who was a plural wife of Emma's husband, Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Sr. Jesse, Sr. was a cousin of Joseph Smith, Jr., the Propet of the Mormon Church. Margaret passed away in 1864 while their husband, Jesse, was on an LDS mission in Denmark. Emma Seraphine West Smith raised Margaret's two children with Jesse as if they were her own until adulthood.
Shown in the photograph are: back row, left to right, Joseph West Smith (Margaret's son), John Walter Smith, Silas Derryfield Smith, and Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr. In the center is Emma, and in the front row, left to right are Eliza Snow Smith Rogers, Samuel Francis, and Adelaide Margaret Smith Fish (Margaret's daughter).
This photo was probably taken after 1909 when Emma's first-born daughter, Emma Seraphine Smith Decker, had passed away from breast cancer. Sadly, the following year, in 1910, Emma Seraphine West Smith herself also passed away from breast cancer. In this photo she looks quite thin and frail and was probably already suffering from the disease for at least year or more when this photo was taken.
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Parowan, Utah, Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., was living with his parents and siblings and they were listed as follows: Jesse Nathaniel, Sr., 35, Emma Seraphine West Smith, 34, Mary Smith, 74, Jesse's mother, Mary Josephine, 15, Hannah Daphne, 14, Margaret A., 13, Eliza Snow, 11, Joseph, 10, Jesse N., Jr., 9, Sarah Elizabeth, 4, Silas Derryfield, 2, and Susan J., 1 year old. In about 1879 the family moved from Parowan, Utah, to Snowflake, Arizona. They were listed in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census there as follows: Jesse N., Sr., 45, Emma, 44, Jesse N., Jr., 19, Sarah E., 14, Silas D., 12, John W., 8, and Samuel F., 6 years old.
Jesse N. Smith, Jr., married Mary Ann "Lannie" Mitchell in 1880 and they had the following children: Elias Mitchell, 1884-1904, Mary, 1886-1892, Jesse Nathaniel Smith, III, 1888-1954, William Cooke, 1889-1969, Emma, 1891-1970, Moroni West, 1894-1971, Erastus Snow, 1896-1896, Silas Aikens, 1898-1916, Samuel Cooper, 1901-1972, Joseph Holmes, 1904-1953, and Sarah, 1907-1907.
Jesse N. Smith, Jr., also married Nancy Ann Freeman in 1884, and they were the parents of Albert Collins, 1885-1885, John Woodruff, 1887-1914, Francis Claire,1890-1937, Henry Lunt, 1892-1978, Edith,1894-1937, Alvin Nathaniel, 1896-1918, and Hyrum Heaton Smith, 1898-1920.
Jesse Jr. passed away July 13, 1912, at the fairly young age of 51 years old and was buried in the Colonia Dublan Cemetery in Chihuahua, Mexico. He may have moved to Mexico in the late 1800's as many Mormon polygamists did in order to escape prosecution. For some reason, he did not return to America before he passed away. His wife, Nancy Ann, passed away in 1941, and was buried in the Virden Cemetery in Hidalgo County, New Mexico, and Mary Ann, passed away in 1949, and was buried in the Parowan City Cemetery back in Utah.
