Mary "Molly" Katharine Kyle

Mary was the daugther of Robert Kyle & Betty Ann Campbell. She descends from the Kyles of Ayrshire, Scotland. She was a Presbyterian. Mary Kyle first married Arthur Johnson who was killed in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. She remarried John Fletcher, then John Michael Smithpeters.

Mary Kyle married three men who served in the American Revolution. She was made a widow twice when John Fletcher was killed at the Battle of Brandywine and the subsequent death of Arthur Johnston, who had considerable property in Washington County, Tennessee (NC). She had one son, John Fletcher, Jr. by her first husband and had two daughters by her second husband, Arthur Johnston. She married lastly or consorted with John Michael Smithpeter according to the pension application filed by John Michael Smithpeter. However she retained her name as Mary Johnston (Johnson) and continued to own property in her own name as is evidenced by deeds filed in Carter County, Tennessee. Before Mary Kyle, also known as Mary Johnson/Johnston died, John Michael Smithpeter married Christena Strevelstrut Miller in 1815 according to the marriage records of Carter County. It is unknown at this writing whether John Michael Smithpeter and Mary Katharine Kyle were divorced or if they were in fact ever legally married. Mary Johnstone/Johnson began selling off her property in Carter County after John Michael Smithpeter married Christena Miller.
Her grandson, Andrew J. Fletcher, served as secretary of state of Tennessee during Brownlow's administration in the Civil War.
