About Mary Munroe

Mary Ball was a daughter of John Ball and Elizabeth Pierce, wife to William Munroe

biography

After a dreadful childhood and youth in Watertown and Woburn, Mary was rescued by William and Martha Munroe of Cambridge Farms (later Lexington). When Martha died in 1672, Mary became the second Mrs Munroe and gave William ten children over the next two decades. Her beautiful stone was among the first placed in the new (now the Old) Lexington Burying Ground. The records of the Middlesex County Court circa 1672 provide details on her story.

Inscription:
HERE LYES Ye BODY OF MARY MUNROO WIFE TO WILLIAM MUNROO AGED 41 YEARS

From: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~timbaloo/William%20...

William The Immigrant€ and Mary Ball Munroe lie near the entrance to the Old Lexington Burial Ground. Nearly three centuries after they put him here, Grandpa William still leans tenderly toward Grandma Mary. When she died in 1692, her stepson John Munroe had just donated this Ground to the Precinct of Cambridge Farms, in the Towne of Cambridge in His Majesty’s Province of Massachusetts Bay, and she was among the first to be buried here.

Nobody would have predicted such a place of honor and distinction for Mary in 1672, when she reached her majority. Had William and his Martha not rescued her then but I get ahead of myself.

(see link for the rest) DIED AUGUST 1692

Notes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ball-17 cites Diane Rapaport, "The Case of the Rhode Island Runaway," in New England Ancestors Magazine, Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society: Spring 2006 Vol 7, No. 2, pages 54 and 55, citing court records

When Mary [Ball] was 16, her grandparents died and she was "put out to service" with the family of Michael Bacon Jr. in Woburn. He impregnated her. She ran off to Portsmouth, Rhode Island where she was welcomed by Francis Brayton and his wife. When her pregnancy could no longer be hidden, she admitted she was pregnant by Bacon. Brayton took a letter from her to Boston, seeking assistance from Bacon. Mary's father brought charges against Bacon, who landed in prison, but escaped. He was captured a few days later and promised through a 1671 bastardy bond to support his child:

"to sattisfy all ye charges arising for the bringing up ye child of Mary Ball"

Mary returned to Boston and ultimately married about 1672 Cambridge Scotsman William Munro by whom she had ten more children.
