Gentlepersons,
I am researching the Nevins line which runs through Capt. David
Nevins of Norwich, CT to David Nevins of Canterbury, CT -- this is
the same as that being researched by Ellen Martin (see her posting of
Wed, 17 Apr 2002). By checking deeds and court records, I have
concluded that David(1) Nevins who died in Canterbury CT in 1757 came
to Canterbury (in 1745) from what is now Palmer, MA (but was then
called Kingstown, and previously known as Kingsfield, Enfield, and
"the Elbows").
I think that I've succeeded in untangling the relationships between
the Nevins of Enfield/Kingsfield/Kingstown/Palmer, MA and David(1)
Nevins (Husband of Mary Lathrop) of Canterbury, CT. These include:
Samuel Nevins [b. about 1657 in (probably) Londonderry, Ireland as
per Samuel's tombstone] immigrates to New England (probably) before
1720. Samuel Nevins dies on Nov. 2, 1751 at the age of 94 in Palmer
MA.
Martha Nevins, Samuel's wife, who is certainly very much younger. We
know that Samuel's wife is named Martha because they jointly sign
deeds when transferring land to Samuel's children.
Samuel has (at least) the following children (and maybe more):
Agnes Nevins, the "daughter of Samuel Nevins" mentioned "The History
of Union, CT" by Charles Hammond (New Haven, Conn: Press of Price,
Lee and Adkins, 1893, 555 pages. See pg. 257).
John Nevins, who died between June 21, 1742 (when he witnessed the
deed conveying land in Union, CT from Samuel and Martha Nevins to
Robert Nevins) and November 23, 1743 when (in a deed of which I have
a copy) Samuel (of the Elbows) gives to his son James Nevins and his
daughter Mary Nevins the estate of his deceased son John Nevins
(2/3rds to James, 1/3rd to Mary).
Robert Nevins, who was born about 1714. He died on 5 Jun 1764 in
prob, Hartford, CT, and was buried in Center Ch, Hartford, CT.
David(1) Nevins, Husband of Mary Lathrop. David was probably born
before 1720 (as he takes joint title to land in Kingstown with Robert
Nevins in 1733) and famously dies in Canterbury, CT in 1758 by
falling off a bridge.
James Nevins, a "Gentleman" of Quabin/Greenwich, MA (a locale which
has been under the Quabbin Reservoir since 1938) who lived until at
least April 29, 1782 when James Nevins (Gentleman of Greenwich, MA)
sells (for 30 Lbs) to Thomas Powers (Gentleman of Greenwich) 50 acres
of land in Greenwich.
Mary Nevins, who receives 1/3 of John Nevins' estate from her father
Samuel Nevins in a deed dated November 23, 1743.
Samuel Nevins Jr., who lives until at least Jan. 1776 (when he buys
land in Union CT).
Jennet/Jonnet NEVINS who appears as a claimant in the lawsuit over
the estate of David(1) Nevins, may be another daughter of Samuel
Nevins.
The Samuel Nevins mentioned above is clearly the same Samuel Nevins
mentioned by Brian Winn in his posting of Wed, 11 Dec 2002:
Generation No. 4
8. Robert * Nevins, born in Marblehead, Scotland. He was the son of 16.
Samuel * Nevins.
Child of Robert * Nevins is:
4 i. James * Nevins, born 1730 in Marblehead, Scotland;
married Sarah * Brown May 18, 1766 in
Glouster, Essex, MA.
Generation No. 5
16. Samuel * Nevins, born Abt 1657 in Scotland; died 1751 in Palmer, MA.
Children of Samuel * Nevins are:
8 i. Robert * Nevins, born in Marblehead, Scotland.
ii. David Nevins
iii. John Nevins
iv. James Nevins
I'd be interested to know where Brian Winn got his information about
Samuel Nevins' sons (I've been deciphering old, handwritten deeds,
while Brian seems to have an independent, and probably more
convenient source!).
I also wonder about Robert Nevins having a son in 1730 (when Robert
was 16) in Marblehead, Scotland (I had assumed that Robert Nevins was
in Palmer, MA in 1730 ... Robert was CERTAINLY in Palmer by 1733, and
his father Samuel Nevins was in Palmer by 1730). Could the James
Nevins in question be Samuel Nevins' son, James Nevins? I have no
record of this James (son of Samuel) Nevins' birth date, but he first
takes title to land in 1741, so he was probably born before about
1725.
I'm also interested in the marriage between James Nevins and Sarah
Brown on May 18, 1766 in Glouster, Essex, MA. I don't have any
record of a marriage by James (son of Samuel) Nevins (deeds aren't
always very helpful here ...), but Samuel's son, James Nevins would
have been about the right age (about 31), and was a "gentleman" of
Greenwich, MA at that time (so able to support a wife). Wrong county
(Greenwich was in Hampshire Co then) but same Colony. What record is
there of this marriage?
Finally, regarding the "two brothers" story from Betty Adams posted
Mon, 22 Mar 1999. Could the James Nevins who came from Scotland in
1731 and fathered Henry Nevins Sr. have been Samuel Nevins' son
James? My reading of the story (as posted by Betty Adams) is that
Henry Sr. was living in Massachusetts when "Tories destroyed all
property" and, so, may have been born in Massachusetts (maybe in
Greenwich, MA?).
