Will of Mary (Brock) Offutt, widow of William Offutt - Prince George's County, Maryland 1748

  • In the name of God Amen.
  • I, Mary Offutt of Prince George's County, being of perfect mind and memory do constitute and appoint this my last will and testament and to dispose of the worldly goods that it hath pleased God to bestow on me in the following manner viz:
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son Edward Offutt one negro man named Charles, one negro boy named Jack, one negro boy named Hercules and one negro boy named Butcher.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son James Offutt five pounds sterling money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Offutt five pounds sterling money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to each of my deceased son William Offutt's children five shillings current money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to each of my deceased son John Offutt's children five shillings current money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to each of my deceased daughter Jane Waring's children five shillings current money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to each of my deceased daughter Mary Bowie's children five shillings current money.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Harris all my wearing apparel, my riding horse and saddle, one negro girl named Clair and one negro girl named Esther.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son Nathaniel Offutt one negro man named Dibbo and one negro man named George and one negro boy named Game.
  • ITEM: I give and bequeath all the remaining part of my estate to be equally divided between my two sons Edward and Nathaniel Offutt and do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Edward & Nathaniel Offutt my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me heretofore made, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth of March 1747/8.Mary "M" Offutt {seal} [note the "M" is her mark.
  • Signed, sealed and acknowledged and declared to be her last will and testament in the presence of Richard Burgess John Brown Brazier Thomas Shreve.
  • On the back of this will was endorsed to wit:
  • On the 11th of Sept. 1748 came before me the subscriber Richard Burgess being of the people called Quakers solemnly affirmed and declared and John Brown Brazier and Thomas Shreve made oath on the Holy Evangelists and Almighty God being the three subscribing witnesses of the within will do depose and say that they saw the testatrix Mary Offutt sign the same will and heard her publish and declare it to be her last will and testament, that at the time of her so doing she was to the best of their apprehension of sound and disposing mind and memory and they did subscribe their respective names as witnesses to the within will in the presence of the testatrix and at her request.Affirmed and sworn before me.D. Dulany, Comr.
  • Note by this transcriber - all of the children are the same as mentioned in the will of William Offutt in 1732 with the exception of the youngest son Thomas Offutt - leaving the strong possibility that he died without children before his mother wrote her will.
