Biography

Mary was born in say 1695 probably in Bristol County in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. She was the daughter of Samuel Salisbury and Mary Brooks.

Mary married Ezra Ormsby at Swansea in 1713.[1][2] It seems none of their children's births or christenings was recorded. The following proposed list of children comes from Pierce:[3]

Ebenezer b. 1714 m. Hannah Cole 14 November 1744
Zerviah b. 1718 m. John Mason 26 October 1738
Mary b. 1722 m. Hezekiah Bowen 12 November 1740
Ezra b. 1728 m. (1) Elizabeth Cole 30 January 1755 and (2) Esther (Smith) Goff 12 October 1764 d. 23 March 1796
Joshua b. 1730 m. (1) Rachel Chase 13 November 1760, (2) Keziah Cranston 10 April 1783 d. 19 December 1810, and (3) Polly _____
John b. 16 March 1732-3 m. Sarah Jolls 14 March 1762 d. 19 June 1819 at Shoreham, Vermont
Phebe b. 1734 m. Jonathan Horton around 1754
Joseph b. 17 November 1736 m. Hannah Jolls 27 July 1760 d. 1819 at Moriah, Essex County, New York
Ruth b. 1738 m. John Chase 25 September 1757
Davis lists only Ezra and Joshua.[4]

Mary passed away after 2 July 1764, on which date she gave an account of what had come into her hands while administering her late husband's estate.

Research Notes

Mary's uncle John Brooks wrote a will in which he named his sister Mary Salisbury (deceased) and Mary's children Mary Salisbury and Samuel Salisbury.[5] That seems currently to be the only known primary document showing that Samuel and Mary (Brooks) Salisbury had a daughter Mary.

Davis[6] and Paul[7] both state that the Mary Salisbury who married Ezra Ormsby was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Brooks) Salisbury. It is unknown if they have any source other than a guess, since such a Mary Salisbury existed, was about the right age in the right place, and no other reasonable candidate presents herself.
