Mary Hunt, the seventh child and eldest daughter of Abigail (née Pancoast) and Robert Hunt, was born in in 1768 in Evesham Township, Burlington County, Province of New Jersey. The Hunts were a Quaker family, and Evesham Township had been settled by Quakers in 1672.

The Robert and Abigail Hunt family around 1783 moved to a farm near Culpeper Court House, Virginia. Mary Hunt and Jacob Painter were married on 16 April 1789 in Culpeper County, Virginia, according to Quaker custom. Mary and Jacob Painter were the parents of 10 children, eight of whom lived to maturity. The two children who died young were: Joshua (1789-93), and Mary (1806-08).

Jacob Painter in summer 1802 traveled to the Northwest Territory's Jefferson County to view the land, and traveled back to Virginia. In autumn 1802 Jacob and Mary Painter, together with their five children, settled in the Northwest Territory, establishing a farm about a mile and half northeast of what would become Salem, Perry Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Four more children were born there to Jacob and Mary Painter.

Charles Cummins Hunt, in A Genealogical History of the Robert and Abigail Pancoast Hunt Family, relates that Jacob and Mary Painter in 1818: "were journeying on horseback to attend a yearly meeting of the Society of Friends at Mount Pleasant, some fifty miles southward in Jefferson County [Ohio]," where Mary's mother lived. Mary developed an acute infection on her face. "They were compelled to halt at Richmond, a small hamlet on the way, where she succumbed to the disease [on 9 September 1818] within two days after the beginning of the attack. To remove her remains back to her home on horseback and along the rugged path was evidently impracticable, and it was necessary to inter them at Richmond."

Although there is no burial record, Mary Painter was likely interred at the Quaker Cemetery in Richmond, which is known to have some very early burials.

The account of the Painter family's German origins is not correct. (p. 74). Jacob Painter's paternal grandfather, John Painter, senior, was born about 1710 in England, and was married in 1735 to Hannah Braddock; both were Quaker residents of Evesham Township, New Jersey.

"Jacob Painter, [the former Miss Lucinda Painter] Mrs. Grimmesey's paternal grandfather, was a native of Frederick county, Va., who settled in Perry township in 1802, locating on what is known as the "John Pow" farm, which he cleared and improved.
