Mary Whistler, daughter of William and Julia (Fearson) Whistler, was born ca. 1815 probably at Newport Barracks, Kentucky where her father was stationed. She married Gabriel Rene Paul at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) on 24 March 1835. In the 1840s they lived in New York where two of their children were born (Gertrude and Augustus Chouteau Paul). By 1850, the family moved back to St. Louis. The couple had five children but probably divorced sometime between 1850 and 13 April 1858 when G.R. Paul and William G. Doxon signed a marriage bond in Campbell County, Kentucky prior to Paul's second marriage to Louise (Doxon) Rogers.
Mary Ann (Whistler) Paul resided with her brother, John Harrison Whistler in Coffey County, Kansas in 1870. She died 11 November 1871, age 56. She is buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Burlington, Coffey County, Kansas next to her brother, John H. Whistler.
Contributor #47220553 has information that Mary Ann Paul was living at Fort Belknap, Young County, Texas in 1857. Her daughter, Gertrude married there in 1857 to a young officer
