Mary Courtnell-Lewis-Price (Garner)

Regarding Mary's date of birth:

I have found no documentation for Mary's exact date/year of birth. (Note: Mary's brother James married a "Mary" by 1710...so there were two Mary Garners.)

Regarding the date of Mary's death:

As her will was probated April 20, 1726.....she most likely died earlier in that year. As I have found no documentation with the exact date of her death.

Mary Garner was the daughter of John Garner (1633-1702) and Susanna Keene Garner of Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Mary was given a thumb ring in her father's will (January 22, 1702) and a looking glass by her brother Benjamin's will (March 31, 1718).

Mary Married as her first husband: Mr. Courtnell

Mary married as her second husband: Mr. Lewis (possibly John Lewis). Their three children were: John Lewis, William Lewis, and James Lewis.

An interesting note here: Mary's sister Susan Garner (also the daughter of John and Susanna Keene Garner) married Mary's son William Lewis. Therefore, Mary was sister of Susan, and also her mother-in-law, ( so Susan married her sister Mary's son).

I have not located the will of Mary's second husband (John?) Lewis.

Mary married as her third husband, Richard Price.

On March 15, 1720, Mary Price, James Lewis and Thomas Ashburn gave bond against the estate of William Price deceased. On the same day Mary Price was granted administration of the estate of William Price.

Mary left a will (Northumberland R.B. 19, p. 388, dated 1724, probated April 20, 1726.

Mentioned in Mary's will:

Sons: William, John, and Clement (last name not stated) (Who was the father?)

Son: Arjalon Price

Sons: John Lewis, William Lewis, and James Lewis

Grandchildren: Ann, Elizabeth, and Vincent Lewis, children of her deceased son, William Lewis (Note: They were the children of Mary's sister Susan).

Granddaughter: Mary Damerille

Grandson: Lewis Toon (Later spelled Tune in VA), son of Mark Toon and Elizabeth Lewis of Richmond County, Virginia. Elizabeth was Mary's daughter)

Witnesses: George Rout, Martha Rout, and William Rout

Wit:

She is recorded as married three times, the first to George Courtnell Jr., the date of that marriage only "well before 1682", and he is noted as dying in 1682 in Northumberland County. Her second marriage was to John Lewis, that marriage about 1682/3, and the third to Richard Price in 1699. All three records are found in "Marriages of the Northern Neck", and note all the above, her as a widow ("relic") in the first two marriages, the death of George as noted, and her as "the likely eldest daughter" of John and Susanna, with the marriage records, making her year of birth about 1662.

Mary's Children:

John Lewis II (1683-1735)

  1. William Lewis (1684-1719)
  2. Mary Ann* Lewis Clayton* Damerill*(1685-1708)
  3. James Lewis (1687-1748)
  4. Elizabeth Lewis Toon (1690-1717)

Arjalon Richard Price (1702-1773)

Some marriage records from Northumberland have alternate spellings for Mary’s two husbands, Claughton and Dameron, and one notes her as Ann, daughter of John Lewis and Mary Garner. The spellings shown above are as per her will.

Mary's will, written in Dec of 1724, was executed in St. Stephan's Parish in Northumberland County on 20 April 1726, likely passed in 1725, as it takes time to execute her Will, taking into account inventory and expenses to be paid from her estate. In it, she refers to herself as simply "Mary Price", but the Northumberland Record Book notes her with her maiden and all three married names.
