About Mary (Randell) Carroll - Nichols - Thompson [Convict "Lady Penrhyn" "Friendship" 1788]

Mary RANDELL was born 1751 Stepney and was baptised on 27/5/1751 (daughter of Benjamin RANDELL and Ann ?)

Mary married James CARROLL on 2/12/1782 in London

Mary was convicted of stealing and sentenced to 7 years transportation. She left England on "Lady Penrhyn" and arrived in Sydney Cove on 26/1/1788 on "Friendship"

Mary married John NICHOLLS on 24/3/1788 at Sydney Cove

On 2/10/1788 was sent to Norfolk Island on "Golden Grove"

Mary had a relationship with William THOMPSON on Norfolk Island

Mary returned to Sydney on "Francis" in July 1794

Mary died in June 1803 at Sydney and was buried 8/6/1803

married 24/03/ 1788

Mary Carroll, c1751-1803, was sentenced to be transported for 7 years at the Old Bailey on 15.10.1786 for theft of a linen sheet and line shirt. On 6.1.1787 she was embarked on Lady Penrhyn, aged 36, a mantua maker.

At Sydney Cove a Mary Carroll married John Nicholls on 24.3.1788, both signing the register. The woman convict at the Old Bailey had been described at her trial as the wife of James Carroll and the marriage of a man of his name to a Mary Randell took place in London on 2.12.1782. A Mary, daughter of Benjamin and Ann Randell, baptised at St Dunstans Stepney on 27.5.1751 may have been the First Fleeter.

Mary was sent to Norfolk Island on 2 October by "Golden Grove" but Nicholls did not go with her, and at 16.7.1794 she was living with William Thompson 1st. She was ordered returned to Port Jackson on 26 June and left by "Francis" in July.

A Mary Carroll married Michael Gay at Parramatta on 28.11.1796 ( but by this time there were several women of this name in the colony who are difficult to distinguish). Mary Carroll (identified as the First Fleeter in an 1801 return of landholders) received a grant of 30 acres at Mulgrave Place on 1.1.1798. The Mary Carroll, wife of John Carroll, London October 1786, who died at Sydney aged 60 on 8.1.1814 matches the First Fleeter details but may in fact erroneously refer to a later arrival.

Her estranged husband John Nicholls married Ann Pugh 25.8.1803, so if Mary was alive at this date the marriage would have been bigamous. But two and a half months earlier on 8.6.1803, the burial of a Mary Carral had been recorded in Sydney. If this woman was the First Fleeter Nichols would have been free to marry. The 1814 burial details are probably wrong. (The Founders of Australia. A Biographical Dictionary of the First Fleet. Mollie Gillen)
