Mary Lilly appears to have been the older daughter of John Lilly II, because she married ca 1688, at least 15 years before her sister married ca 1703 The patent says that Mary was the daughter of John Lilly. It also says John Lilly married the heir of Edward Malson There is a lot of material on the internet to the effect that the wife of Armiger Wade was the daughter of Edward Malson, but that theory has been discredited. This patent date is more than a little bit confusing, but it was apparently filed 20 October 1688, because the one after it in the book was filed on that date Either Mary (Lilly) Reade married very young or she was born before John Lilly III. It seems likely that this patent was filed shortly after she married to nail down the ownership of the land.
Unfortunately, the patent does not say which John Lilly married the heiress. However we know that John Lilly II married Dorothy Wade and she could not have been the Malson heiress, John Lilly III, born 1669 was too young to have married and been Mary's father so we are left with John Lilly I as the only John Lilly who could have married the Malson heiress, and thus John Lilly II as the only John Lilly who could have been her father

GEDCOM Note
"One fairly reliable source ("Some Prominent Virginia Families," by du Bellet) has Robert READE, son of George and Elizabeth (MARTIAU) READE, as being the husband of Mary LILLY and the father of Margaret READE, who married Thomas NELSON; however, another source that's also pretty reliable (a book about Nicholas Martiau by Dr. John B. Stoudt) has Mary LILLY's husband as John READE, another son of George and Elizabeth. "du Bellet doesn't mention George and Elizabeth READE having a son named John. Dr. Stoudt mentions both John and Robert READE, but doesn't have a wife or offspring for Robert. They both have the husband of Mary LILLY as being a justice of York County whose will was proven 20 November 1712."
IV. Robert" Reade. Married Mary, daughter of John Lily.
