From Jennifer Margaret Spellacy, April 23, 2024: This is the history that I have regarding Mary:
Adam Reid was born April 25 1827 died 1898 at Jamestown SA of heart disease. He married Mary at St Patrick's Catholic Church, West Terrace, Adelaide on Sep 2 1854. I have their marriage certificate. Previous to that, Mary emigrated to Australia on the ship "Earl of Elgin" along with her mother, Mary Touhy/Groom, widow of James Tuohy with her other children John, Margaret, & Bridget. Another daughter, Ellen, was also residing in Sydney Australia.
The "Earl of Elgin" arrived on 30 July, 1853. I have the shipping records that show that Mary, aged 19 years, was delivered of an infant, Patrick, on board. I haven't got his exact birthdate. The shipping list mentions that she was married to a Patrick Kennely still resident in Ireland. Other comments have stated that Mary was his wife or his stepdaughter! This man Patrick Kennelly born Nov 28 1829, died March 12 1908, who married Katherine O'Connor & had 18 children by her, one of whom was called Timothy1848 - 1907. This is where the name of Timothy originated from.
Patrick Senior was not a good man. Records that I have quotes numerous records of arrests & numerous court appearances. It's my belief that Mary was not related to him. I think that Mary became pregnant to him & that Mary & her mother emigrated to escape the shame of an unwanted pregnancy. By the morals of that time Mary would have suffered. I have tried to track the infant Patrick. Some sources suggest that he emigrated to the USA, but this is unsubstantiated.
I live 20ks from Jamestown & I've search the records up here but I can't find any references to Mary residing there. So Mary is still an enigma!
