m2. Samuel Goodspeed, 26, 2, 1712 in Newport, Rhode Island.

There is no real evidence that Mary's maiden name was a Sampson. There is no birth record for Daniel Howland's wife. The Sampson name is used on many trees on Ancestry, RootsWeb, and others.
It seems that the claim that Mary was a Sampson first arose in the old Howland Family, by Franklyn Howland.
Research on the Sampson family does not show anything about about a Mary Sampson.

Daniel Howland was the innkeeper and proprietor of Howland's Ferry. He acquired the ferry and inn from John Simmons in 1694. Daniel was prominent in town affairs and for the first twenty years he lived near his ferry service. The town meetings were regularly scheduled at his residence which also doubled as a tavern, therefore the immediate surrounding vicinity of the ferry became known as Howland's Ferry Village. It later would become known as Stone Bridge Village.
His wife Mary kept her husband's tavern while she was a widow.

(3b) Samuel Goodspeed (12) married Feby 26, 1712, Mrs. Mary Howland,t widow of Daniel Howland, at Tiverton, R. I., Thomas Church, J. P. officiating; they had :
(4a) Ruth (36) born August 4, 1714.
fMary's maiden name was Samson or Sampson. She was probably the sister of Benjamin Howland 's wife. She was the daughter of Thomas Samson and probably the grand daughter of Abraham Samson; she died Nov. 17, 1736.
Daniel Howland was tavern keeper at Tiverton and his widow continued the same after his death and until she married Samuel (12).
It is barely possible that Samuel may have had a second daughter, Remembrance, born late in 1715 or early in 1716. On Dee. 13, 1733, a Remembrance Goodspeed probably married Richard Borden (or Barney or Brown) at Tiverton. However, it is much more probable that this Remembrance was the daughter of John (13), Samuel's brother; see elsewhere.

Samuel (12) died at Tiverton probably in 1716. He was dead at the time his father's will was made in August, 1718. In a deed dated at Newport, R. I., February, 1717, whereby Joseph Chaplin conveyed certain property to "Mary Goodspeed, widow of Samuel deceased," his death is recognized. Samuel (12) was about forty-two years old when he married; no doubt he left property which passed to his widow and daughter. He was reared at Misteake.
Mary was probably the sister of Daniel’s brother Benjamin’s wife.
