OBITUARY DEATH OF MRS CHARLES SAMPSON, Sen. It was only last May we had to record the death of Mr Charles Sampson, sen., and now, after little over seven months, it is our painful duty to announce that his relict died on Tuesday evening last at about half-past seven o'clock. The deceased was born at Mathenbury, near Bridport, Dorsetshire, in England, in 1817, and came out to the colony with her husband in the ship Timandra, which arrived off New Plymouth on February 23rd, 1842. They first lived at the Henui, but afterwards removed to Bell Block where they remained till the war broke out with the natives, when Mrs Sampson and her children went to Nelson. On her returning to Taranaki Mr and Mrs Sampson settled on their farm at the Hua, where they remained till about ten years ago, when they came into town to live. The deceased lady has been very feeble for some time back and it is a curious coincidence that she died on the last day of an expiring year, as her mother did thirty-one years ago. The late Mrs Sampson leaves a large grown up family, consisting of three sons, Mr George Sampson (Waitara), Mr John Sampson (Hua), Mr Frederick Sampson (Sentry Hill) ; and seven daughters, Mrs A. J. Hoskin (Waitara West), Mrs T. Clare (Waihi), Mrs Smaller (Stratford), Mrs J. Rattenbury (Tongaporutu), Mrs. H. Rattenbury (Bell Block), Mrs Gilburt (Wanganui), Mrs G. Loonoy (Oakura). The funeral of the deceased lady took place at 2 o'clock to-day, and was attended by a large number of the old settlers. (Taranaki Herald, 2 January 1896, p. 2)
