About Charles Sampson

Born in Bridport, Dorsetshire on November 1, 1818. When Charles Sampson was 11-years-old he was taken into the weaving trade where he prepared flax into fibre of hemp before it was woven into heavy canvas. All his working life in England he was at the same mill and with little hope of promotion he and his young Mary wife decided to try their luck in the new colony of New Zealand, along with Mary's parents and their family. The voyage was a tiresome one with baby Marina, who was born on December 10, 1840. They sailed to New Zealand on the sailing ship "Timandra". What a daunting sight it must have been for a young couple to face when they arrived. Charles first job after landing in New Plymouth was cutting lines and laying out the new town. He then bought a block of four acres at Henui, now known as Fitzroy, but this was sold and he purchased 50 acres at Bell Block, which he broke in and farmed. During the Land Wars he joined the Taranaki Militia while Mary and the younger members of her family were taken to Nelson for safety. When the Land Wars ceased Charles went back to the Hua block at Bell Block where he farmed until around 1885, when he left the farm to one of his sons and shifted to New Plymouth to live. He was active in local Government and was involved right up until the time of his death in 1895, as a director of the New Plymouth Co-Operative Society, and an original member of the Friendly Society. Charles died on the May 26, 1895 and his wife Mary followed on the December 11 the same year. They are both buried in the Te Henui cemetery.
