About Mary Jane Self
Daughter of John Narramore, Sr. (1762-1851) & Mary M. Walker (1761-1803), Mary Jane married Jesse Self 092/06/1812 in Bledsoe County, TN, to become the mother of his twelve children. She died in 1850, and at that time Salem Church was the family's place of worship (Jesse was the original trustee at the church's founding in 1837, just a short distance from their home place). it is only a presumption, though a very strong one, that she was actually buried here. In that time and place, many people were buried on their homesteads rather than a churchyard or cemetery—however that was mostly true of those who resided more distantly from such set-aside places of interment. On a Civil War battle map, the Self home site is marked and labeled only a short distance from Salem Church. It appears that practically all of the old markers have disappeared, even where these may have simply been uninscribed field stones. This, along with the loss of all church records, means that there is no way of knowing with absolute certainly that Jesse and Mary are buried in this cemetery.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jun 10 2022, 18:22:19 UTC
