Parents
John Justus Hinckel 1706–1778
Maria Magdalena Eschmann Hinckel 1710–1778
At the time of John Skidmore’s marriage to 'Polly Hinkle' they settled near Mud Lick on the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac about two miles from the Mouth of the Seneca. This was not far from Fort Hinkle near Riverton in Pendleton County, Virginia which had been built by his father-in-law “Jost” Hinkle and his family during Mary Magdalena Hinkle Skidmore
the French and Indian War. Hinkle’s stockade was never attacked but with the coming of the Revolution the British first agitated the Indians, and then armed them, and alarms were numerous all over on the frontier.
