Biography
Updated 28 May 2024
Mary Goodall was born about 1590 in England. Her parents have not been identified in Anderson’s Great Migration Begins, or in other published journals.
She married 1st, Richard Masterson in Leyden, Holland on 23 Nov. 1619. He was the son of Edmund Masterson and Joane Beching.
Richard Masterson married Mary Goodall “of Leeston” (perhaps Leiston in Suffolk) in Leiden, Holland on 23 November 1619 [NS]. William Talbert, John Ellis (brother-in-law), Elizabeth Kibble, and Mary Vink were witnesses to the marriage.
They had two children, Nathaniel and Sarah, who came with them to Plymouth Colony on 24 Apr 1629 aboard the (second) Mayflower under ships Master Wm. Pierce, arriving in mid July.
Mary (Gooddall) Masterson, widow of Richard Masterson, married by July 1, 1633, at Plymouth, to Rev. Ralph Smith. His second marriage; the name of his first wife is not known. No children are recorded. She died in 1659 [NEHGR 144:24.]
The Smith's moved to Manchester by 1645 where he preached to the people prior to a church being formed. They were in Ipswich by 1652 and finally lived in Boston by 1660.[1] Ralph Smith died at Boston on March 1, 1660/1; "Mr. Ralph Smith Pastor of the Church of Plymouth died the first of March."[1]
Children of Richard and Mary Masterson:
- Nathaniel was born about 1620. He married Elizabeth Cogswell on July 31, 1657, in Ipswich and had three children. She died in 1691–2. He died before July 1, 1708.
- Sarah was born about 1625. She married John Wood/Atwood by 1645 and had nine children. He died between November 22, 1675, and March 7, 1675/6. She died probably early in 1701.
Notes
Richard Masterson was in Leiden by October 7, 1611 where he was a member of Robinson’s church. There, he was a wool comber by occupation and bought a house on the Uiterstegracht on January 2, 1614, the sale of which was the subject of years of negotiation by his wife’s second husband. From Michael Paulick’s research, it would seem that Masterson traveled between Leiden and Sandwich.[3]

On 22 Jul 1634, "Mary the late wife of the said Richard and William Brewster (both of Plymouth)... being the guardians of Nathaniell & Sarah the children of the said Richard deceased" made a power of attorney to three Leiden residents to sell a house owned by "Richard Masterson late of the City of Leien deceased."[11]
