MOSS family listed as being taxed on their being FPOC in Granville Tax Poll Tax of 1762. Desendant William B. Spears was tithable in Granville Tax District in the company of Old Cheraw serving Col Eaton in the Cherokee War area which means he had someone in his household who was a FPOC and he was paying tax on them. So, if he was paying the tax on himself, it was based on his mother's legal status as a FPOC. The Old Cheraws District named in 1768 was for this group of Old Cheraw in SC. The mother's legal status was the way that Free People of Color were taxed by the British American system and this is the person who's native was the reason for the taxation. ~ ~ Rachelle Roby, MS, CCC/Sp
