About Mary Sprenckel

Taken from http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72981912:

Mary is somewhat of a mystery lady.

We believe she was born between about 1771-1775, possibly in PA. Her maiden name is unknown. There was speculation many, many years ago that her maiden name was Hunsacker but that was only speculation. We have no proof. Do not include Hunsaker as her surname in your database.

Family tradition is that Henry Sprenkle married three times and produced 21 children. We can account for 17 children, so the story seems possible.

Mary was the mother of his youngest 10 children.

Henry appears in Shenandoah Co., VA personal property tax records from 1788 through 1813. Then in 1814, Mary appears in his place. We assume he died 1813-1814, which meshes with their youngest child's birth in Apr 1814. Mary continued to be taxed in Shenandoah Co. through 1816. In 1820, Mary was enumerated as head of household in Highland Co., OH.

We believe that as her children grew up, married and left home, Mary accompanied her son Samuel to Fayette Co., OH. Youngest daughter Lydia also went to Fayette Co. Samuel's 1830 & 1840 census entries include a woman of Mary's age.

We believe she died 1840-1850 and is buried with other members of the family at White Oak Cemetery, Green Twp., Fayette Co., OH. Indeed there are broken & missing tombstones next to where some of Samuel's young children are buried.

Mary & Henry's children are: Mary (Stults); Absolom; Solomon, Sarah (Hiestand); Susannah (Hampshire); Samuel; Elizabeth (Wirt); David; Jesse; & Lydia (Larkins).

I have entered Mary as Mary Sprinkle, as that is the spelling on the 1820 census - and the spelling used by her children. Her name was spelled Springle on the 1814 personal property tax in Shenandoah Co. and Sprinkle in 1815 & 1816.

Children:

 * Mary Sprinkle Stults (1794 - 1865)*
  • Absolom Sprinkle (1796 - 1859)*
  • Solomon Sprinkle (1798 - 1839)*
  • Sarah Sprinkle Hiestand (1799 - 1886)*
  • Susannah Sprinkle Hampshire (1801 - 1884)*
  • Samuel Sprinkle (1802 - 1870)*
  • Elizabeth Sprinkle Wirt (1804 - 1874)*
  • David Sprinkle (1806 - 1876)*
  • Jesse Sprinkle (1811 - 1881)*
  • Lydia Sprinkle Larkins (1814 - 1893)*

About son Absalom's death The Highland Weekly News (Hillsboro Ohio) 03 Mar 1959 Thursday VOL. XXII Number 44 p.3, column 1

A Sad Accident Near Belfast- A note from our friend, Mr. Issac Hot- tinger, informs us that on Tuesday of last week, Mr. ABSALOM SPRINKLE, who resided about 4 miles south of Bel- fast, in Adams county, was instantly killed by the falling of a tree which he and his son were cutting down. Mr. Sprinkle was an industrious and useful citizen of Adams county, to which he removed from Highland in 1838, hav- ing emigrated to this county from Vir- ginia in 1816. He was in the 62nd year of his age, and he leaves a large circle of relatives and friends.

Son Absalom's death notice in "The Highland Weekly News" states that the family moved from Virginia to Highland Co. in 1816. In 1820, Mary is enumerated as head of household in Highland Co., OH.

We believe that as her children married and established their own households that Mary left Highland Co. and accompanied her son Samuel to Fayette Co., OH. Youngest daughter Lydia also went to Fayette Co. Samuel's 1830 & 1840 Fayette Co. census entries include a woman of Mary's age.

We believe she died 1840-1850 and is buried with other members of the family at White Oak Grove Cemetery, Green Twp., Fayette Co., OH. Indeed there are broken and missing gravestones next to where some of Samuel's young children are buried.

(The photo at right of the marker showing M.S. could possibly be for Mary but it is more than likely the "footstone" for Mary Larkins Sprinkle.)
