About Mary Stearns

Biography

Mary (Stone) Stearns immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Stone, daughter of Simon Stone and Joane Clarke, was born in Boxted, England about 1632. She traveled with her parents and siblings on the vessel Increase to New England in April 1635, when her age was given as 3 years.[1] The Stone family settled in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Mary married Nathaniel Stearns in Dedham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1660, based on the birth of their first known child on 22 Aug 1661.[2][3][4] This was somewhat of a "late" marriage for both, as Mary was about 28 and Nathaniel was about 35 years old.

They had children, all born in Dedham:[5][6][7]

  1. Mary (22 Aug 1661), married Joseph Wight, in Dedham[7]
  2. Samuel (16 Oct 1666, bp. 25 Nov 1666), married Mary Brown, in Concord[8]
  3. Nathaniel (4 Dec 1668, bp. 6 Dec 1668)
  4. John (23 Mar 1670/1, bp. 23 May 1671)
  5. Isaac (15 Aug 1672 - 13 Aug 1676)

Mary (Stone) Stearns died on 10 May 1684, in Dedham.[7]

Nathaniel married, second, Mary Raine of Weymouth, on 24 October 1687, in Milton, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[4] It is not certain, but Mary was possibly the daughter of John and Judith Rogers and the widow of John Raine. If so, she was about 46 years old in 1687. Nathaniel died by June 1701. No death record was found for his second wife, but she presumably outlived Nathaniel, and she may have remarried after his death.
