Mary Smith was born in Watertown about 1647. She was a daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary Knapp. She was married on November 26, 1667 in Watertown Massachusetts. The marriage was recorded in the town books: "John Stratton and Mary Smith Joyned in Marryage the 26 9mo 1667." Mary and John had ten children.
When her husband John died on April 7, 1691 it was one month before the birth of their son Samuel. John's estate was not probated for many years.
Mary moved in with her eldest son John and his family. John would die in 1708 and his wife Bethshuah Applin Stratton died the next year. Soon John Applin, father of Bethshuah, moved into the household with his daughter Mary Applin, to care for John's young children.
Mary died on September 27, 1719, having survived her husband by twenty eight years.
