Mary was the middle child of three children, the daughter of General Nelson Bowman Sweitzer, George McClellan's Aide de Camp. He was the brother of General Jacob Bowman Sweitzer who was in charge at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. They were both sons of Henry Sweitzer, a large landholder and minor politician in Maryland, and Ann Elliott Bowman, and they were the grandsons of George Ludwig "Lewis" Sweitzer of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until my 4th great grandfather Simon, bought his half of the family farm in 1770, and Lewis moved to Doylestown, Pennsylvania, not far from where I was born and raised so many years ago. Simon and Lewis were the sons of Conrad Sweitzer, all three with another brother Henry and sister Elisabeth, arriving in Philadelphia in 1749, from I believe, Dackenheim, Germany (near the city of Mutterstadt) Their mother had died either in Germany or on the ship Edinburgh on the voyage to America.
