About Mary Mills

Biography

Mary Terrell was the daughter William Terrell, Sr. and Susannah Waters of Hanover County, Virginia.

Mary Terrell first married about 1726 in Virginia to Micajah Chiles (d: c1734 VA). Two of her brothers, Henry and David Terrel,, married respectively Anne and Agatha Chiles, sisters of Micahah. [1]

Her husband, Micajah, died about 1734 and Mary married secondly to Matthew Mills (d: 1753, son of Henry Mills). [1]

Her Mills children were mentioned in the last Wills of their father, Matthew Mills, and their brother, William Terrell Mills.

She died on 10 Apr 1781 in Hanover County, Virginia (citation needed). “It is not known whether Mary lived to enjoy her share of either Micajah’s or Matthew’s estate.” (Tidewater Virginia Families, page 236)

Disputed Origins

Her name is not listed as a daughter of William Terrell, of Hanover County & Susannah Terrell

Ref: Terrell Society: Terrell Genealogy. Chapter IV: William Terrell who married Susannah Waters. <PDF>. Page 56-61.

However, evidence places her as their child. “The lives of David & Henry Terrell and Micajah Chiles & Mathew Mills are so entwined, there can be little doubt of this relationship.”

There is some dispute as to whether or not Mary is a dtr. of William. An article in the Virginia Historical Magazine (volumn not given) on the Chiles family, does not know her first name, but says that she was a dtr. of Joel Terrell, Sr. This is based on records (Land Book XXXVIII, pp. 524-25, dated 6 April 1769) showing that John Chiles, son of Mary and Macajah, inherited land from his grandfather Joel Terrell. "(Copy): Whereas by patent, under seal of our Colony and Dominion of Virginia, bearing date of the ninth day of July, one thousand seven hundred and twenty-four, there was granted unto Joel Terrell one tract or parcel of land containing four hundred acres, lying and being in the County of King William, now Caroline, etc.; and whereas John Chiles, in whom right and title of part thereof supposed to contain 250 acres is etc., found to contain by survey 255 acres etc., Henry Terrell enters suit on same for accounting of the extra 5 acres in order to settle lines etc. Land said to adjoin that of Manoah Chiles." Mary's two daughters married sons of William Terrill and Susannah Waters. If she were also a dtr. of William Terrill, it would mean that they both had married their own uncles. This lends weight to the idea that she was not the daughter of William. The dates of birth are just estimates and I suppose that it is possible that Joel Sr. was one of the first children of William and that he had this Mary who was of the age that Micajah Chiles could have married her. A new note I found says: Mary married Matthew Mills and continued to live in Caroline County. However, her husband had extensive land holdings and at one time, owned 2400 acres in Albemarle County (1745). He also owned over 1000 acres in Goochland County, adjacent to Ragged Mountain (1737). Matthew was the eldest son and heir of Henry Mills, who had lived in New Kent County. Matthew and Mary had sons named, William Terrell Mills, Matthew, Charles and Menan Mills. Their daughters were named Mary and Betty. These children were named, not only in their father's will, but also, in the will of William Terrell Mills, recorded in Charlotte County, in 1769.
