Became a resident of Louisa County as a result of lines being redrawn, not that he moved. He was a carpenter and owned slaves. Had 31at his death.
JOHN TATE born about 1687 in New Kent Co., VA; died in 1769 in Louisa Co., VA;
Notes: He lived in the section of New Kent Co., VA that was later taken to form Louisa Co., in 1742.
John was an elder in the church of St. Martin?s Parish.
His Will was written November 25, 1768 and probated September 11, 1769.
John Tate grew up and lived his entire life in one area of Virginia that changed from New Kent Co to Hanover Co (in 1720) and then to Louisa Co (in 1742). He probably never lived very far from his parents' residence. John married twice. His first wife was Lucy. Some people have stated that she was a Waddy, but after researching the Waddy family, there is no evidence that she was a Waddy. Since her son Zacharias named a son Anderson Tate, and there were Andersons in the parish, perhaps she was an Anderson.
There is a noticable gap in the births of the children, so Lucy was probably the mother of only the first few children. About 1736 probably in Hanover Co, John married (2) Mary Waddy and she was named as his wife in his will.
In Sep 1756, John and Mary sold land with witnesses Zacharias Tate, Zaccheus Tate, and Charles Dickinson. In May 1765, John gave land to sons James, Zacharias and Zenas, witnessed by Zedekiah Tate and Sarah Tate (probably his daughter).
John served as an elder for St. Martin's Parish in Louisa Co. He seems to have been a devout Christian, naming 5 of his sons from the Old Testament prophets with names beginning with Z.
John's will was dated Nov 20 1768 and probated Sep 11 1769. He named his wife Mary and 10 children: Zacharias, Zaccheus, Mary Snelson, Zenas, John, Waddy, Sarah, Zephaniah, Zedekiah, and Uphan Tate. The executors were wife Mary Tate, son Zacharias and friend David Anderson. Since James was not named in his father's will, he probably died before 1768.
Mary lived until at least November 1773 when she wrote her will. It was probated in Dec 1773 [Louisa Co?].
In 1825, grandson John Tate Winston (son of Anthony Winston and Uphan Tate) of Green Co KY appointed Thomas Robinson to see what was due him from the estate of his grandparents John and "Lucy" Tate. Since John Winston's grandmother was Mary Waddy Tate, the name of "Lucy" is incorrect. John Winston was incorrectly remembering his grandfather's first wife. It is also rather surprising that some of the estate was still to be settled from his Tate grandfather who had died over 55 years earlier! (Valentine, 347)
