About Mary Kee Waller, of Newport Pagnell

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography Vol. 59 No. 3 (July 1951) THE POET writes of the happy return of Charles the Second. Hammers resound with the restoration of churches throughout the width and breadth of the land. This England, tired of long years of curfewed nights, tired of wineless dinners, tired of puritanical living, welcomed back the gay and gallant Charles the Second and went about with alacrity to wipe from their lives all trace of Cromwell. England's colonies changed governors and the great upper middle class gave more thought to these colonies, a rich source of revenue and expanselessterritory for the settlement of young colonists. Yea! More and more thought was given to America. This was England; and her ships plying the seven seas overwhich she was undisputed mistress. Lying in the south-centre of this land is Buckinghamshire; adjoiningLondon and bounded on the south by the river Thames. Drained by theOuse, near the centre of this shrine, referred to as Bucks, lay theHundred of Newport. Pagnell is nearly in the centre of the Hundred andthus in the heart of England. The great road to Liverpool passesthroughPagnell and is in some parts dead flat with hedgerows on eitherside;thoughoccasional glimpses of the surrounding country-side may behadand a church spire appears between great branches of English oak.TheChurch of Walton parish, dedicated to St. Michael, wasalready anold edifice, irregular and consisting of a square tower, a naveandchancelwhen our storybegins. The low ground on which the churchstands in thisflat country-side causes it to be excessively damp, giving it a sombreair. So we find Walton, Bucks, England, in 1669. On a winter day of thatyear - January 13, to be exact - came John Waller and Mistress MaryPomfrett to Walton, to be married. Of Mary Pomfrett little is known.Welearn that William Promfrett A.B. was vicar of Astwood, May 27, 1689through December 21, 1704; and thatMr. Benjamin Pomfrett, of NewportPagnell, purchased of Sir William Tyreyham, Knt., the right ofadvowson;whilelater, Robert Pomfrett was rector of Emberton fromApril 30, 1753 until1804. Apparently John Waller and his wiferesidedin NewportPagnellfor in the register of that parish we findthe births of theirnumerouschildren recorded. The family of Waller is one of the most ancient and distinguishedamong English ancestry. There is an unbroken male line from WilliamtheConqueror's time down to the present time. An English genealogistclaims to have traced the name back to the sixth century.

The English speaking branch of the Waller's was founded by twobrothers, John Henry David de Waller and Alfred de Waller, Norman's,who came into England with William the Conqueror the year 1066 andfought with him at Hastings. John Henry David Waller was given landsin NottinghamCounty; Alfred in the County of Kent. The AmericanBranch traces descent from Alfred de Waller, of Kent, who died in 1083(Domesday Book)

Mary probably came to Virginia after the death of her husband andlived with either her daughter Mary, 1st Lady of Virginia of son, Col.John Waller.

According to "The Herndon Family of Virginia.", p 8, Mary PomfrettWaller lived next to Edward herndon and Mary Elizabeth Waller HerndoninCaroline County., Virginia.

MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 16 Church of England. Parish Church of Newport Pagnell (Buckinghamshire), Newport Pagnell Burial Register: Burials 1716: "Mary ye wife of Mr. John Waller bur.(buried) May 14" She would have died May 12-13.

A family tree compiled by a descendant says "She was born about 1648 at Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire, England and is said to be the daughter of William & Ann (KING) POMFRETT." Some descendants claimed she emigrated to Virginia as a widow and probably lived with her son Col. John Waller and died Sep. 2, 1738, at his plantation "Newport" in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. No sources have been shown for the 1738 death date, but perhaps that was a daughter or granddaughter of Col. John Waller. Some say John Waller's wife was a Mary Kay or Kee/Key Pomfrett or switch the Pomfrett and Kay around. Some researchers say she came to Virginia and died at a date later than 1716. Mary Kee Pomfrett is shown currently on the Family Search (LDS) site as having died in Virginia in 1735.

The Register of the Parish of Walton (near Bletchley), Buckinghamshire, 1598-1812, page 18 of book (19 of register page), Call number: 942.575 K29pr v,1: (Digital version online, Digital image 28/60): 1669. Mr John Waller and Mrs Mary Pomfret were married January 13th 1669.

The "Mrs" frequently included in transcriptions of the record is a title of respect rather than an indication of a previous marriage. A title of respect is used for each individual, "Mr" and "Mrs". Transcribers often omit both titles or include only the one for Mary Pomfrett.

Some family trees show her middle name or maiden name Key or show her as first marrying a Key or first marrying a Pomfrett. Apparently the name Key appears in a family tree compiled by an American descendant.

William Pomfrett is documented as the father of Mary Pomfrett Waller, wife of John Waller in an abstract of a 2 Oct 1669 Buckinghamshire, England mortgage transcription posted on Newport Pagnell Historian's website.

Also in William Pomfrett's will, dated 29 May 1666, proven 25 June 1667, Mary was unmarried and under 21, so born after 1645.
