Biography

Mary (maiden name unknown) was born between 1626 and 1630 in Cape, Barnstable, Massachusetts. She married John Yates about 1649.[1] Their son John Yates Jr. was born in Duxbury on 15 Aug 1650. The family moved to Eastham, when John Sr. died in 1651, before June. In October 1651, the widow Mary and the widower Richard Higgins married.

[2] Mary and Richard had 10 children together. They moved to Piscataway, New Jersey about 1669. Richard died between 20 Nov 1674 and 1 Jun 1675.

Mary married for the third time to Isaac Whitehead about 1689.[3] Isaac died about February 1691, and thereafter Mary lived with her son Thomas Higgins. He mentioned her in his will dated 2 Feb 1702 and Mary would have been over 70 at that time. Her actual date of death is unknown.[4]

Mary has two possible birthdates, both equally unsourced: 1626 or May 3, 1630. Also, Mary may have died either in Elizabeth, Essex, New Jersey or in Piscataway, Middlesex, New Jersey. Although her third husband Isaac Whitehead was living in Elizabeth, Essex, New Jersey on 8 Feb 1683 when he took an inventory for the estate of Leonard Headley,[5] it is unclear where Isaac and Mary lived during their brief marriage.

Yates is Mary's first husband's name.[6]Mary's maiden name is unknown and unsourced, as are her birth and death dates.

2nd Marriage in Eastham October 1651 Mary (_____) Yates, widow of John Yates of Eastham [MD 8:13] married Richard Higgins. She survived her second husband and married (3) at Piscata way as his second wife Isaac Whitehead, she having recanted her intention to marry Samuel Moore Sr. of Woodbridge [NYGBR 47:21]. She was living in 1702 when her son Thomas allowed her a life tenancy in part of his home [NYGBR 47:22]. obtained the right of a proprietor share in the twp. of Piscataway for her son Zerah

The Higgins Family is well documented in the book "Richard Higgins of Plymouth and Eastham, Massachusetts and Piscataway, New Jersey" by Katharine Chapin Higgins - 1918 -.

Richard Higgins arrived in the United States on the ship "Anne" in 1623. He married first, Lydia Chandler on 23 November, 1634 at Eastham, Massachusetts. Her father was Edmund Chandler of Duxbury and Scituate, Massachusetts. They had two sons, Jonathan and Benjaman who remained in Massachusetts and were the ancestors of most of the Higgins in New England.

After the death of Lydia, Richard married a second time to Mary Yates, widow of John Yates of Duxbury. They were married in October of 1651. Richard and Mary had ten children. In 1670 they moved to Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Richard died before 1677.

Mary married a 3rd time, 1684, to Isaac Whitehead of New Haven, New Haven, CT
