Departure The Ganges was built in India in 1794. She arrived at Portsmouth on 15 October 1796 to make ready for the voyage to Australia. Only two convict ships arrived in New South Wales in 1797, the Ganges arrived in better health than Britannia convicts 10 Dec 1796 • England

The Guard consisted of soldiers of the New South Wales Corps. Governor Hunter was glad of their arrival. The 2 officers and 60 private soldiers coming out in the 2 convicts ships Ganges and Britannia will be a relief to the duty of the troops

Mary Wicks-Cubit came to Australia on board the ship "The Granges" as a soldiers wife to George Cubit. The Granges sailed from Cork late December 1796 with a cargo of 203 male convicts & several wives. The detachment of NSW Corps, wives, pork and beef for the colony. The Granges arrived from Ireland into Sydney Cove 2 June 1797. Mary became pregnant during the voyage out and their 1st born son William Augustus (the first Australian born Cupitt) was born Sydney Cove in one of the hospital tents for the Military on 3rd October 1797.
