Sir John Winter 1555-1638 , vice admiral to Drake He brought back "Winter's Bark" [Cortex Winteranus] from the Magellan Straits, commanded the "Elizabeth" which turned back instead of circumnavigating the world with Drake. He was accused of piracy and embarassed his family by his freebooting exploits but redeemed himself when on the Vanguard against the Armada . The lands he inherited were left in trust "till he should have cleared himself of the charge of piracy" m Mary daughter of Sir William Brounker, of Melksham by Mary Walter daughter of William Mildmay 1589 & Mary Walsingham
