He was the son of Sir George Wynter, of Lydney (1527–1581) and Anne Wynter nee: (Brayne) (1537–1581). His grandparents were Captain John Wynter 'Treasurer of the Navy or Treasurer of Marine Causes [4] and Alice Tyrrell or Tirry, (1500–1561)

Sir John Winter 1555-1638 , vice admiral to Drake He brought back "Winter's Bark" [Cortex Winteranus] from the Magellan Straits, commanded the "Elizabeth" which turned back instead of circumnavigating the world with Drake. He was accused of piracy and embarassed his family by his freebooting exploits but redeemed himself when on the Vanguard against the Armada .
