About Maryken Cantwell
"On 58 October 1656 Governor Stuyvesant belatedly issued to Geertruydt Jacobs, widow of Roelof de Haes, patents for two lots near Fort Casimir. In 1671 she was living on a small lot southeast of Carr's "great house" at the corner of Hart Street and the Strand with her son Johannes Roelofsen de Haes, baptized in New Amsterdam 4 December 1644. Her daughter Marritje de Haes, baptized 13 May 1646, was then married to Edmund Cantwell living next door.
It seems that Maryken was born in 1630 and baptized at age 16 in New Amsterdam. But no source is given for the DOB of 1630.... We do notice that a child is attributed to her in the year 1650
conflict
Maryken cannot have been the legitimate child of Roeloff and Gertruyd and have been born in 1630. This is because thae marriage date of ROELOFF AND GERTRUYD is 1643.
Also: Roeloff was Gertruyd's 2nd husband... Perhaps Mary/Maryken was the child of Gertruyd's 1st husband... (?)
The female child baptized in NA in 1646is written "Maryken". Miight Marritie have been another person?
notes on her husband
Edmund Cantwell (#142), one of the English soldiers arriving in 1664, was named High Sheriff in place of William Tom in August 1672. Cantwell married Maritje de Haes (see #143), and had an active political career until his death in December 1683. He was survived by his wife and three children, Richard, Johanna and Elizabeth. His lot was bound by Machial Barron on the northeast and Captain Carr and widow Crabbe on the southwest.
