Mathew was granted 100 acres of land between Elk River and Holly Creek in 1820. He was appointed constable in 1822 and served until his resignation in 1827.

7 Jan 1774 - Matthew Sands was born in PA. A family Bible has recorded the birth dates of Matthew (referred to as John), Levisa and their nine children.
1800 - Matthew Sands and Levis Fields were married about this time.
1812 - Matthew Sands was appointed constable in Randolph County, VA district #8.
1820 - County lines were changed so without moving, he, his wife Levisa (Fields), who was born 8 Sep 1781 in VA, and their children were Nicholas County, VA residents.
1820 - Matthew Sands was granted 100 acres between Elk River and Holly Creek.
NOTE OF INTEREST: A grant of 100 acres nearby was given to John Sands (born about 1798) who had arrived with his wife and three sons. The relationship between the two men is not known. Court records show that both men served on juries.
1822 - Matthew was again appointed constable, the court finding him "a man of honesty, probity and good demeanor." He served until his resignation in 1827.
1826 - Matthew gave a deed of trust for 100 acres to John Craig for John Matthew’s use.
1833 - By this time both tracts of land had passed to Robert Green and John Sands had left the county.
1838 Matthew received a patent for 38 acres on the right hand fork of Salt Lick in Braxton County, VA.

To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting.
Know ye that in conformity with a survey, made on the 30th day of January 1838 by virtue of Land Office treasury warrant No. 6616 there is granted by the said Commonwealth, unto Matthew Sands a certain tract or parcel of land, containing eighty four acres, situate in Braxton County, bounded as follows, beginning at a white oak on the east side of the right-hand fork of Saltlick Creek on a hillside, about 20 poles from the mouth of the Flesher's fork of said right-hand fork, & from thence S 36 W 44 poles crossing the creek to a hickory and two beeches on a hillside S 42 E 45 poles crossing the Flesher's fork to a white oak on a hillside N 87 E 17 poles to a small white oak on a hill side S 58 ½ E 42 poles to a [?] white oak on a hillside S 21 E [74?] poles to a large Spanish oak on a hillside S 55 E 58 poles to a large white oak on a hillside S 18 ¾ E 69 poles to a beech near the foot of the hill N 38 E 96 poles crossing the creek and a steep point to a beech near a run, N 58 ½ W 127 poles crossing a branch to a small hickory near the foot of the hill N 32 W 102 poles to a white oak N 63 W 25 poles to a white oak, N 58 ½ W 32 poles to the beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its appurtenances, to the said Matthew Sands and his heirs forever.
In witness whereof, the said David Campbell Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his Hand, and caused the Lesser Seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed, at Richmond, on the 30th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight and of the Commonwealth the 63rd.

Oct 1843 - Matthew Sands deeded his patent for 38 acres at Salt Lick to his sons James and Samuel.
Dec 1844 - Both Matthew and Levisa were deceased by when the tract was sold to Bierne, Duffy and Company.
