Matias Tapio Into

This is the story of an ordinary Finnish man, Matti Into, my father-

August and Miina Into's seventh child, Matias (Matti), was born in the summer of 1928 in Karstula, Finland. August later praised his son while in America for his friends: "I have a strong and healthy son growing up at home in Finland." During Matti's school days, a classmate accidentally hit Matti on the occipital lobe. The shock was intense and his consciousness faded for a while. It was possibly the cause of his epilepsy. For at the age of 16, he had his first epileptic attack and was taken to a hospital across the lake. The attack and its aftermath passed and Matti began to miss home. Without anyone noticing, he slipped out of the hospital. In hospital clothes, without shoes, he ran a mile across the ice home. I never knew if he had to undergo more medical testing at that time.

Matti was an extremely shy young man. Once he was with his sister, Mari, who was 20 years older than Matti and married. Mari served raisin soup for dessert. The only problem was that there was only a fork next to his plate. Finally Mari noticed her brother trying to eat soup with a fork. He asked, "Why didn't you say you don't have a spoon." To this Matti only replied: "Yes, it goes like this."

Nevertheless, a wife was found and Matti married Anna Valtonen in 1953. Anna was a friend of Mari's daughter Liisa from childhood. Matti and Anna had started building their own house already in the summer of 1952. The following year, a barn was built with room for a few cows, sheep and chickens. The horse and the pig were housed in the barn, also. However, the small farm did not support a family of three. Thus, Matti was also employed elsewhere in forestry and building construction.

By the 1960s, epilepsy had begun to recur and Matti's health began to deteriorate. In 1972 there was a change in family life. I (Mauno), the only child in the family, moved to Sweden to find employment.

With deteriorating health, there was no option except selling the cows and later the horse. Particularly, giving up the horse was difficult for Father Matti. The same Uljas horse had served him all the time he had lived in his own house. Matti began having difficulty with his balance. (This may be a Bjorkbacka family health issue as a number of the American "Becks" have had this problem.) In December 1997, he fell so badly on the basement stairs that he had to be rushed to the hospital in Jyväskylä by ambulance. A week later, he fell out of bed. The nurses lifted him back to bed, but when they returned to check on him, he was dead.

Tarina tavallisesta suomalaisesta miehestä, Matista, isästäni-

Aukusti ja Miina Inton 7. lapsi, Matias (Matti), syntyi kesällä 1928 Karstulassa. Aukusti kehui poikaansa myöhemmin Amerikassa ollessaan kavereilleen: "Minulla on voimakas ja terve (riski) poika kasvamassa kotona Suomessa." Kuitenkin16 vuoden ikäisenä hän sai ensimmäisen epilesia kohtauksen ja vietiin sairaalaan järven toiselle puolelle. Kohtaus ja sen jälkitila menivät ohi ja Matti alkoi kaipaamaan kotiin. Ilman, että kukaan huomasi hän pääsi livahtamaan ulos sairaalasta. Sairaalavaatteissa ilman kenkiä hän juoksi kilometrin matkan jään yli kotiin. Tarina ei kerro, joutuiko hän uusiin tutkimuksiin sillä kertaa.

Matti oli tavattoman ujo nuori mies. Kerran ollessaan sisarensa Marin luona, joka oli 20 vuotta Mattia vanhempi ja naimisissa, oli tämä tarjonnut jälkiruoaksi rusinasoppaa. Vika oli vain siinä, että lautasen vieressä oli vain haarukka. Viimein Mari huomasi veljensä yrittävän syödä haarukan avulla soppaa. Hän kysyi: "Mikset sanonut, ettei sulla ole lusikkaa". Tähän vastasi Matti vain: "Kyllähän se näinkin menee".

Kaikesta huolimatta löytyi vaimokin ja Matti meni naimisiin Anna Valtosen kanssa v.1953. Anna oli Marin tyttären Liisan toveri jo lapsuudesta lähtien. Omaa taloa he olivat aloittaneet rakentamaan jo kesällä 1952. Seuraavana vuonna saatiin rakennettua navetta, jossa oli tilaa muutamalle lehmälle, hevoselle, sialle, lampaille ja kanoille.Pieni maatila ei kuitenkaan elättänyt nyt jo kolmihenkistä perhettä. Niinpä Matti oli töissä myös muualla, esim. metsätöissä ja rakennuksilla.

Tultaessa 1960-luvulle, oli epilepsia alkanut uudestaan vaivaamaan ja terveys alkoi muutenkin myöhemmin huononemaan. Kerran Matin koulumatkalla oli koulukaveri heittänyt kiven, joka vahingossa osui Matin takaraivoon Isku oli ankara ja hän menetti tajuntansa hetkeksi. Se saattoi olla syynä hänen epilepsia sairauteensa. Vuonna 1972 tapahtui muutos perheen elämässä. Minä (Mauno), perheen ainoa lapsi muutin Ruotsiin työttömyyttä pakoon.

Niinpä ei ollut muuta neuvoa, kuin myydä lehmät ja myöhemmin hevonenkin pois. Erityisesti hevosesta luopuminen oli isä-Matille raskasta. Sama Uljas-hevonen oli palvellut häntä koko sen ajan, jonka hän oli asunut omassa talossa. Matin terveys heiikeni yhä. Tasapainon kanssa oli vaikeuksia. (Tavallinen sairaus Björkbacka-suvussa, koska monella amerikan "Beck'illä" sama ongelma.) Niinpä joulukuussa 1997 hän kaatui kellarin rappusissa niin pahasti, että jouduttiin kiidättämään ambulanssilla Jyväskylään sairaalaan. Siellä hän viikon päästä tipahti sängystä. Hoitajat nostivat takaisin sänkyyn, mutta kun palasivat takaisin oli hän sillä välin kuollut.

Turvallinen, ymmärtäväinen, vaatimaton ja huumoritajuinen ovat ominaisuuksia, jotka tulevat mieleeni, ajatellessani isääni. Mauno Into
