About Matija Antolic

ACCIDENT NO. 26 - July 7th, A.D. 1906, Calumet and Hecla Mine, Matt Antelich. Matt Antelich, a trammer, was fatally injured at the 44th level No. 5 shaft, Calumet Branch of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, by a fall of rock. The accident occurred about five o 'clock in the morning. The deceased, with others, were waiting for the cage when the accident occurred. He died from his injuries in the Hospital shortly after being taken there.

Inquest held by Coroner Fisher.

Matt Maleritch, being duly sworn, testified as follows: “I am a trammer. Work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company at the 44th level, No. 5 shaft, Calumet. I know the man that was killed, was working with him. The rock fell from the hanging side, fell about six or seven feet. I went to the hospital with him. The rock struck him in the side. It was quitting time and he was lying down waiting for the cage. When the rock struck him he jumped up and ran by the shaft, but fell down right away, and did not get up again. It was his first shift working here.”

Joseph Sherbat, upon his oath says: “I was working this morning at the 44th level with the man that was killed. He had finished work and was waiting for the cage. I was lying down and was nearly asleep when I heard something drop. I saw Antolich jump up and run by the shaft. I jumped up and took him by the arm to hold him. Then he dropped down and was unconscious. I can add nothing further to what the other witness has said.”

Verdict of the Jury: “That the said Matt Antelich came to his death on the 7th day of July, A.D. 1906, at the 44th level No. 5 shaft, Calumet Branch, of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, by falling rock.”
