Everyone in the village called her Gluva. Matija had a childhood illness that left her deaf. She had a name for everyone in the village using her sign language and she found a way to communicate. During the war, they were hiding in caves when the Italians were approaching. A baby started to cry, but Matija would not allow them to kill the baby Naya Grbic. Somehow, she muffled or stopped her cry.
