About Matilda Tilly Bachrach
Decatur Daily Review 1/3/1939:
After being in poor health for more than a year, Mrs. Matilda Bachrach, 88, widow of the veteran Decatur Clothier Henry Bachrach, died at 11:45 am yesterday in her home, 453 W. Prairie Ave. of a complication of diseases.
Mrs. Bachrach was born in Baltimore, Md. April 14, 1850, the daughter of Abraham and Eva Hamburger. She married Henry Bachrach there Jan. 15, 1873.
Mr. and Mrs. Bachrach came to Decatur in Feb. 1877. They had planned to go to Iowa but they liked Decatur and stayed. Mr. Bachrach opened a clothing store on the northeast corner of Lincoln square which for many years was operated under the name of Cheap Charley's. Later the store was given the name of its proprietor. Mr. Bachrach was one of the business men operating on Lincoln square who raised a fund to add to that contributed by the street railway company for the erection of the present Transfer house to take the place of the old wooden building which formerly stood on the corner.
Mr. Bachrach died suddenly July 22, 1917, while on vacation with Mrs. Bachrach in Charlevoix, Michigan. At the time of his death he had been in business longer than any other business man in Decatur.
Mrs. Bachrach leaves four sons, Albert, Edgar H., Stanley, and Dr. Benjamin Bachrach, all of Decatur, three daughters, Miss Mattie H. Bachrach, Los Angeles; Mrs. Rose B. Smith, New York City; and Mrs. Helen B. Grier, Decatur; one brother, Henry Hamburger, Baltimore and three grandchildren. One son Louis died in Philadelphia in 1913.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm tomorrow at the family residence with Rabbi Adolph J. Feinberg officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn cemetery. Friends may call at the residence.
