About Matilda Ann Claiborne
Matilda Ann Beckstead Claiborne was born 8 Mar 1848 in Rock Port, Atchison County, Missouri near Hamburg, Iowa. Her parents were Simon Beckstead (8116008) and Mary Elizabeth Calkins (31286008).
Her father took a homestead near Hamburg, Iowa, and at the age of 2 1/2 yrs she moved with her parents to a farm near Hamburg, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage on 12 Feb 1865 in Fremont County, Iowa, to James Madison Claiborne. James was a veteran of the Civil War.
James and Matilda had a strong role in reorganizing the Latter Day Saints in southwest Iowa. Three of her uncles were in the Morman Brigade. Her grandfather, Enoch Kellog, fought in the Revolutionary War.
James & Matilda had 9 children. Known children: Dora (8096423), Ida May, Mary Margaret *Richards, James Edward, Caroline Matilda *Martin, and Archibald Mark.
